Appellate Court: Employer Must Follow Employee Handbook
Employers who issue handbooks of policies and procedures to at-will employees frequently include disclaimers emphasizing that the contents are meant as guidelines and not terms of an employment contract. A Massachusetts appellate court recently found such a disclaimer ineffective, and upheld a jury verdict in favor of an employee who charged his former employer with breach of contract for firing him without following the disciplinary procedure set forth in its manual. SRBC's Jean Musiker writes about the case in a new Law Alert.
